Arroqueño (Agave Americana var.)

Arroqueño has long held a special place in the gastronomic and distillation traditions of Miahuatlán as one of the region’s oldest cultivars, but today is quite rare. The arrival of the Espadín in the 1980 ́s and 1990’s came at a time of mass wholesaling of agave from Miahuatlán to Jalisco. With agave prices at historic lows, many farmers chose to replant with the novel and fast-maturing Espadín, instead of the often slow-growing Agave americana and Agave karwinskii types that are well adapted and native to the area. Over the last decade, producers in Logoche have been successfully reproducing these magueyes though seed and bulbil cloning, but these agaves take around 15 years to mature.
